Fighting Obesity with Wearable Technology!

According to the Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary, Obesity is defined as:  a condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body and that in an adult is typically indicated by a body mass index of 30 or greater.

So how do you calculate your body mass index or BMI? Using Google, I searched for a good source to help me calculate my BMI. Immediately, I find that the National Institute of Health or NIH, has a calculator on their website. Understanding your target weight range is a good place to start on a journey to better health and wellness.

Using wearable technology for those suffering from Obesity and weight issues, can be very essential in helping to monitor HR, frequency of activities, calculating caloric intake, reminding someone to take a break and move around, stretch. Developing a routine is important, and being able to analyze and visualize your daily results, can have an important impact on motivation and compliying with your new lifestyle. It’s important to keep your mind on the long term prize, think of getting back in shape as a marathon race, a long, steady journey, instead of an all sprint. It takes time and patience to regain control of your physical well being.

Diet is a word synonymous with people trying to lose weight, on the contrary, the original use for the word diet first appeared in English in the 13th century. Its original meaning was the same as in modern English, “habitually taken food and drink.”  as described by Merriam-Webster. Reading this, I decided to consult the Oxford English Dictionary, to see the similarities as defined by both trusted authorities. According to The Oxford Dictionary, Diet is defined as: “The kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats.” Many new models of fitness trackers, allow for caloric calculations of daily food intake. Monitoring your food consumption, can be essential to understanding your specific weight issues. However it requires complete honesty and compliance to imputing your data. In the end, you are only cheating yourself otherwise.

Diet can arguably be understood as restricting yourself from certain foods, or only eating a certain quantity of food, in the attempt to lower your weight. However, proper planning, to avoid becoming deficient in specific vitamins and minerals, that your body requires daily, can be a huge risk you take if poorly planned. Diets that are mostly or all vegetable or plant based diets, often lack vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and calcium, B12 is found naturally, only in meat products. These specific vitamins and minerals, are essential in healthy maintenance of the skeletal system. Proper supplementation can prevent such problems. Always consult a nutritional specialist.

Organizing a work out plan, specific to your lifestyle and abilities, is essential to maintaining long-term health and wellness. According to the MayoClinic, exercise can have 7 specific benefits; controlling weight, combatting health conditions and disease, improve mood, promote better sleep, put a spark back into your sex life, and you can have fun and increase social skills.

As far as choosing the right exercise or sport, consider this; What activity will you stick to long-term? Often we choose something brand new to be our inspiring activity of choice, but often become frustrated with the difficulty in learning something new. Unfortunately, choosing something that you are good at, and can bypass the learning curve, is often going to promise faster results. If mountain biking, or trail running is something you will do multiple times a week, then stick with it. Maybe several different activities, mixing the gym into it at least twice a week. Weight lifting activities still have their place in long term strength and agility. A fitness tracker makes monitoring your workout program as simple as downloading an app to your phone. You can have constant updates of your progress, simplifying and often extending compliance to your physical activities routine.

Getting adequate rest, has many benefits, but none so important as lowering stress, and allowing your body to perform necessary repairs. Think of this in logical terms, would a car mechanic leave an engine running while he/she is performing repairs? It seems counterintuitive to the process, so should lack of sleep. Inadequate sleep, increases cortisol levels, related to immune system issues, which cause unnecessary stress on your body and health. A good fitness tracker can monitor your sleep patterns, to help discover the root cause in sleep deficiencies.

How can you help counter Obesity and disease associated to unhealthy weight issues? Inspire someone you love, battling with diet and weight issues. Encourage them to join you in physical based activities, and spend the time to help them find the root cause of their weight issues. Weight issues often have a personal crisis linked as the source of weight issues. This is the perfect chance to get involved and help educate the ones you love, to find healthy alternatives regarding diet, exercise, and a total lifestyle change to healthy living.
